Lavender Brown could be found sitting on a blanket on the edge of the lake. Ever since she had received the water elemental power she had felt drawn to the lake more often. She figured it was because the lake was the largest body of water on the school grounds and because of that it was easier for her to relax and calm down when she was by it. And boy did she need some way to calm down. Lately everyone but the other elementals had been getting on her nerves, by the way that they were talking about her and how they were treating the other elementals.
Lavender leaned back on the blanket placing her arms behind her and rested on them. She turned her head up and looked at the sky and remembered a scene that she had com a crossed earlier that day. She had been walking towards the lake and there was a group of people in front of her, talking about how bad the elementals were and how they wished that they would leave the school. This had made Lavender upset so she walked up to them and told them that they were jerks and then she summoned her element and made it into a ball and threw it at them. Lavender laughed as she watched the kids run away and scream. Thinking back on it now Lavender knew that that she shouldn’t have used her powers on those kids, but she just couldn’t help it.
After leaning on her arms for so long they started to hurt so Lavender sat back up and held her hand out in front of her. She took a deep breath and called her element to her, which wasn’t very hard because of where she was located. Once she felt her power she let it flow to her hand and she formed it into a ball like she had done earlier, the only difference was that this ball was smaller and more compact and would hurt more if she were to throw it at someone. Lavender wasn’t sure what she was going to do with the ball so she just stared at it for a few minutes.

Declan was sitting in a tree not too far off from where Lavender was. Other than the Whomping Willow and the occassional disgruntled bird the trees were actually a pretty nice place just to relax. He knew he was getting a little old for childish things like tree climbing but he could not help it. He loved heights. It was either this or hang out in the Astronomy Tower and it was a little chilly to be that high up. He had been there since well before the kids Lavender attacked, as well as the girl herself.
He frowned, when she did use her abilities against them. He, of course, did not approve of their taunting the elementals, but he did know that if they provoked the students things were just going to get more strained. He kept his mouth shut, however. It wasn't his place and even though he was just a half blood he knew enough not to get on on if their bad sides. He wasn't a complete pushover, he was a powerful wizard. He just wasn't stupid enough to think he could take them on with both their magic and their newfound abilities.
"Neat trick." He called from his perch in the tree. He was starting to feel a little stalkerish. He didn't know if she knew he was there. He doubted it because she did not say anything to him, but that didn't neccessarily mean anything. He hopped down easily from his tree branch, bending his knees carefully as not to hurt himself, or fall. He didn't need to go around looking like an idiot. That was something he took very seriously, his reputation. He did not like making a fool of himself, he looked weak enough constantly being so protective of his siblings. One of the two wasn't even a Slytherin. He sighed, walking toward her once he knew he had gained his balance completely.
"I umm...couldn't help but see what happened earlier. You know you should be more careful. Using your powers against the students will only make them more hostile. Give them more reason to want to hurt you or the others." He said flatly. He wasnt trying to sound like a teacher or parent. He knew some of the other elementals were against using their powers on the students. Though, some of them had much more dangerous powers at a glance. There was a lot of things you could do with water, right down to controlling the water in soeone's body, but it could also be used in non-destructive ways. It really was the opposite of fire, which at a glance was much more destructive. It was hard to use against someone without hurting them.

Lavender was still staring at the ball of water that was now hovering a few feet in front of her when she heard the boy. She jumped a little bit not knowing that anyone was around her, which caused the ball of water to fall to the ground and splash her. ”Thanks, but now I’m all wet.” She said to the boy turning to face him after she heard him jump down from the tree. She took one look at his uniform and realized that he was a Slytherin. She knew that had she been any other Gryffindor she probably would’ve walked away from him at that point, but she wasn’t just another Gryffindor she was a Gryffindor that was living with the Slytherins and had to get along with them, so she didn’t walk away.
Lavender sighed when she heard him say that she shouldn’t use her powers on other students. She knew that he was right but sometimes it was really hard not to use them. ”I know that I shouldn’t but there are times when I can’t help it. I usually try not to cause any harm to people when I do use it on them, cause I know that it could really hurt them.” She said to him hoping that he would believe her when she said that. She really did know that her power was a powerful one and with one slip of control she could seriously hurt someone. She figured that was why the other students were so afraid of them.
While Lavender waited for him to say something she looked him over. He seemed okay for a Slytherin. She was glad that he didn’t seem afraid of the elementals because it meant that she could have another friend that wasn’t an elemental if she ever needed one. But she hoped that she didn’t need another friend. She actually missed her friends and she hoped that they would get over this fear of her soon. Even her best friend was afraid of her and that hurt Lavender because her and Parvait had been through so much, and she hated that their relationship had ended over something so stupid.

"Don't get me wrong, those idiots deserved it. I would have thrown hexes in a heartbeat. Add a punch to the face for good measure. It's just...you have to remember it's not only you that you might be effecting." The was something about actually being physical in a fight, rather that just hexing that made his blood rush. He tended not to indulge in that particular temptation, however. When he fought he reminded himself of his father. His stepfather as well. The men in his life had never been very good role models. He could only hope that he was a good role model for his brother and sister. He loved the two to death and he could not help it. As soon as he was only enough to walk and talk he wanted to take care of them. They claim not to need it but they were not hardened like he was. They needed the protection.
"Couldn't you just pull the water out of your clothes?" He asked. It made perfect sense to him, but he did not know if she had that level of control. It had only been a few weeks after all. She might not have thought about it so he was offering his help, his advice. He wasn't usually this nice to people who weren't in his own house but considering she was living in the Slytherin dorms now he figured he could break his little rule.
She was attractive enough but he had noticed she could be a little on the clingy side, or so he'd heard. He wasn't one to take rumours very seriously. With gossips running rampant spreading lies he learned very soon never to trust what someone said to him that didn't come straight for the horse's mouth, so to speak.
"Where are my manners? I'm Declan Chamberlain." He said, holding his had out to her for her to shake. Charming, dapper and always in control. Things he likes about himself, thought the last one wasn't always true. He was often reckless and impulsive. He tried to refrain from those things when around his siblings, and pretty much everyone else. That was, until they pissed him off. Then he was fierce and dark and down right ruthless. Those were traits about himself that he despised. They reminded him so much of his father in him, and with his father out of Azkaban now it had been becoming increasingly more difficult to ignore the man. Pretend he did not exist.

”It is nice to meet you Declan, I am Lavender Brown one of the few people that pretty much everyone is afraid of.” She said as she took his hand and shook it. She almost wanted to add that he probably knew who she was, but she didn’t feel like making herself look like and ass. It was something that she wasn’t and she never wanted to be. Sure she was clingy at times but being clingy was a lot different than being an ass. Lavender listened to him say that the other Elementals might be affected from what she did. ”I never thought about that.” She said more to herself than to him. She hadn’t thought about something that she could do could affect the rest of the Elementals. But then again she had never put that much thought into what one elemental did and how it could affect the rest of them. ”I will have to remember that the next time I’m about to use my powers. I don’t want everyone else to have a harder time because of something that I did.” Lavender said this time talking to Declan and not herself. ”I don’t think that I can just yet.” She said answering his question. She knew she was gaining control over this power but she also knew that she didn’t have that much control over her element yet, and she didn’t want to end up doing something that might hurt her. ”I might when I have more control over this whole water thing, but right now I know that I don’t have enough control over it to not take the water out of my body yet. And I would rather not die because I was trying to pull the water out of my clothes to dry off.” She said explaining her reason of not being able to pull the water out of her clothes yet. He nodded, not fully understanding her issues with control. He knew that was to be expected. He was not in the same situation. He tended to control things in his life relatively flawlessly. Of course, other than his more-than-minor addiction to caffiene. In fact he was about due to get some more. He really needed to pick up some Cherry Cola over the next holiday. His suplly was running dangerously low and he did not want to be sneaking around to the kitchens to beg for a cup of coffee or something. That would get embarressing.
"I apologize for startling you then." He said firmly. He wasn't too full of pride to apologize for things that were indeed his fault. He knew plenty of Slytherins who felt they were above apologies, and he was definitely not one of them. That was not to say he was humble, because that definitely was not the case. In fact he could be a bit full of himself at times, but he had been living around people with very little manners his whole life. He wasnted to be the exact opposite so he trained himself, not to mention his siblings. He think it stuck better with Darren than it did Dahlia though.
"I could see not wanting to kill youself, I have a feeling that might be just a tad unpleasant." He said. It was a joke, and probably not a very good one. His sense of humour has always been a bit off, he just hoped she didn't think he was a weirdo. He really didn't need anyone thinking he was odd, because he wasn't. He didn't claim false normality but he didn't like to go around and have people calling him a freak.
"I'm not trying to make you feel bad! Don't get me wrong, those guys totally deserved it..." he said. He felt a little bad for bringing it up. It was something that just popped into his head and he could not help that it came out. She had power. She was attractive and she could get him into their little group. Having them as friends might get him a safe card for his siblings.

Lavender looked at Declan and said. ”Its fine. It’s not like I don’t like water or anything.” She said with a laugh. Lavender loved the water even before she became the water elemental. She had a feeling that, that was probably why she had become the water elemental. Well that and the fact that according to her parents everybody who had received an elemental power received the power that had been passed through their families for generations. So now that she thought about it Lavender realized she loved the water because it was in her blood to love it. Lavender laughed at Declan’s joke about not wanting to kill herself. ”Yeah, it would probably be very unpleasant.” She said with a smile. She didn’t know why she was joking about killing herself, it was something that she should never have to talk about. But she knew that she was only joking and that she really wouldn’t kill herself. So that was probably the reason why she was talking about it, in a joking manner. ”Oh, you aren’t making me feel bad. You just brought somethings to my attention that I hadn’t thought of.” She told him. She really didn’t want him to think that he was making her feel bad, cause he wasn’t. In fact he was making her feel a lot better than she had in a while. She figured it was because he was one of the first people since she got her powers who wasn’t afraid of her and was actually talking to her like she was a regular person and not someone who could end up being evil. And that made her feel good, and happy. [/blockquote]

"But it's a bit cold out here to be all wet." He said with a shrug. He was only wearing his school jumper and a pair of black slacks and a pair of chuck taylors, much to his professor's distaste. It was cool outside but the cold had never bothered him much. It was bracing, reminding him where he came from. He remembered many of winters huddling in boxes, his back to the wind as a sheild to his siblings. One wouldn't expect it but cardboard actually got surprisingly warm when it was being filled with body heat. He sighed. He had some so far from that. He went from a filty halfblood, a homeless halfblood to being able to practically buy his own jet in about a minute flat. All it took was the moment the clock struck 7:15am on his seventeenth birthday. Now he had money and a flat and a manor and the Chamberlain family resources. He was the head of the Chamberlain family and he planned to take that mantle as soon as the war ended. Chamberlain was not a name one wanted to have when you were betting on the prize horse. He didn't think Voldemort was going to win. Maybe before the elementals but he was very sure none of them were going to bow to the side of a halfblood that they could probably mop the floor with after some training. "Don't mind me then. I have a tendency to put my foot in my mouth lately, and it's actually very uncharacteristic of me. I have found myself apologizing a lot." He said with an easy shrug. It was true though. Life had been throwing him hard balls when it came to talking to women. He was sure it was just stress due to the fact that his father was no longer safely behind the walls of Azkaban, where he couldn't hurt him and his siblings. He had been thingking a lot about going to the Order of the Phoenix about it for a while, but he wasn't even sure who to contact about it other than Potter. He did not trust the boy much. He had turned his back on some of the people he claimed to want to protect just because they were now more powerful. [/blockquote]

When she heard him say that it was a bit cold, Lavender shivered for the first time since she had been out t here. ”I actually didn’t notice that it was that cold out.” She said to him with a smile. She wasn’t sure why she didn’t notice the cold; she wasn’t wearing a jacket or anything. In fact she was only wearing her school uniform which included a skirt, blouse and the stupid sweater vest that she had to wear. She hated the vest with a passion, she didn’t understand why the school made all the students wear them, it’s not like it looked good with anything and it was a pain for her to dress it up the way that she could with her blouse. ”Sometimes you just can’t control what you say no matter how hard you try. And you shouldn’t have to apologize for telling someone the truth or something.” She said to him. She didn’t understand why people apologized for the things they said half the time. She figured that if it was said, it was said and there was no taking it back not matter what you did. Although she knew that some people didn’t like to say things without thinking them through completely she sure wasn’t one of those people. And most of the Gryffindor house knew that. She remembered a time when she was sitting with Pavarti in the common room talking about everyone that walked by them, and making fun of them. She knew that it was wrong but it was just the way that they were, and she knew that even though it was wrong and she might have hurt the person she wouldn’t take it back cause that was just not how she was or actually how she is. "Right there, that's why you are not a Slytherin." He said with a chuckle. There were two types of Slytherins in his. Ones who used their power and influence to sway everyone around them, those who rarely had to apologize. Then there were the ones with little influence. Those ones had to make sure they were liked but feared by all. That's where he was. He was a charming fellow, but he could also hold his own when someone made him snapped.
"You either use your name and money to get everything you want and therefore have no need to apologize. Or, alternately you are always struggling to be one step ahead of everyone. Always on top. Best method? Get everyone around you to simutaneously like you, but fear you. I am a halfblood, so I can't use my name and I just recently aquired my money. While I kiss no one's ass to try to keep them around and liking me, I do try to be polite as much as possible, unless I am meant to do the opposite." He said with a smirk. Always calculating. Everything he did always benefitted him somehow. He came off as sweet and charming. He was really using her to get, if not on the elemental's good side, at least on less than negative sides with them. This was a first. Usually when he was nice to girls it was to get in their pants, but there was really only one girl he was trying to get at right now.
He smiled lightly just thinking about her, he could kick himself. He probably looks like a moron. But Cassie. She was not like the other girls he's dated. Not one bit. She was gorgeous and had a way about her. She always controlled the room. She was someone that would be able to match his personality. Someone who would not let him always tell her what to do, because that would get terribly boring after a while.

Lavender looked at him when she heard him say that she wasn’t a Slytherin. ”No I am not.” She said to him. She knew that she wasn’t a Slytherin and there was no way that she could ever be one. She just didn’t have the qualifications for being one, or at least she believed she didn’t. ”Yeah, I defiantly do not do those things.” She said to him. She never really tried to use her pureblood status or money to get anywhere in life, her parents had taught her not to do that. And she didn’t understand why some people would do that. Lavender was a person who was taught to make friends that like you for the way you are and not for what you have. And until she became a student here at Hogwarts she didn’t realize that her way of life was so much different from that of the other Purebloods, and the rest of the Slytherins. [/blockquote]
